Barcellona gives ban to Iscomar
The Catalan port reject to perform mooring and towing services until holding company Contenemar settles its huge debts
The Port Authority of Barcelona (APB) has authorized the mooring and towing operators the right to refuse to provide service to ships owned by Iscomar.
The Spanish company is a subsidiary of the ailing Contenemar, currently in bankruptcy (Ship2Shore No 35/2009) having huge debt for not paying port dues in Barcelona, Valencia and Vilagarcia that - according to estimates of the association of Spanish shipowners ANAVE - are amounting to tens of thousands of euros. The decision of the Catalan port further undermines the prospects for Contenemar, who last month was accused by ANAVE to break the rules of free competition, since it was offering rates of transport in dumping, and to refuse paying the dues owed to port authorities.
Iscomar owns a fleet of three ro-pax and ro-ro-owned and manages two others under charter, which cover regular routes between Barcelona and the Balearic Islands. Meanwhile the line from Palma de Mallorca to Valencia, so far carried out with the ferry Isabela del Mar, was suspended and customers of Iscomar were invited to apply to the services offered by Acciona Trasmediterranea.
