V.Group launched project 'Embark' to transform crewing

World’s leading provider of marine support services engages Accenture to redesign crew management and seafarer experience

V.Group engaged with management consultancy Accenture to transform its approach to crew management. The Embark project seeks to develop an in-house shared services model which streamlines and optimises key processes for seafarers, customers, and colleagues; it will see the introduction of new and enhanced technology to support these shared services and digitise the shipowner and seafarer experience.

“For customers, Embark seeks to drive cost efficiencies and vessel performance by introducing enhanced dashboard metrics that continually monitor and analyse ongoing crew management. It also drives more informed decision-making through real-time, accurate reports combined with better planning tools and increased budget transparency.

For seafarers, Embark will include streamlined and standardised recruitment software, a new global payroll system, and an app that seafarers can use to search for assignments, sign contracts, and manage documentation. The project will also create a consistent model for professional development” states the leading global marine and offshore vessel management and support services provider, with 3,000 colleagues based across 67 offices globally, supporting over 40,000 personnel in marine and offshore roles. “In doing so, Embark addresses the fact that while digitalisation is transforming the industry, ships’ crew often remain left behind. Traditional, manual processes are common when it comes to the recruitment and administrative processes that accompany seafaring. This not only eats into shore leave but takes up time that could be spent improving quality of life at sea, and crew performance”.

Embark Project forms part of V.Group’s growth strategy of investing heavily in recruiting, developing and engaging the best maritime talent, and contributes to the company’s ambition to transform the industry and become the leading global provider of crew management services.

In the last quarter 2018 V.Group will open a new crew management centre in Mumbai, coinciding with the rollout of a digital platform that will allow seafarers to apply for assignments, upload documentation and track progress and travel arrangements.

At the heart of project is the expectations to further improve the customer experience and V.Group’s ambition to drive the transformation of the industry and to be the leading global provider of marine support services, including crew management.

In a parallel development, V.Group announced new model of technical management with 'Fleet Cell of the Future' to increase performance by encouraging innovation with a purpose, and designing basic unit of operations around the customer’s needs

This new operational design rethinks and redesigns the traditional Fleet Cell model, the building block of technical management at V.Group; with market-leading performance design and an open-plan layout based on the latest in ergonomic research, it enables a shift away from single-user focus to full-team problem-solving. The Fleet Cell of the Future acts as a test bed for innovations, where the technical management team can measure operational, financial, and customer KPIs for the Fleet Cell and measure the effectiveness of new approaches and technology, based on agile processes.

By adopting this new approach, V.Group claims to have already seen significant improvements in the operational KPIs for procurement, certification, defect reporting and application of best working practices within an existing Fleet Cell of 17 vessels. “There are more innovation initiatives in the pipeline, as well as an increased number of potential innovative partnerships. These tangible results are testament to the fact that every facet of innovation in the creation of the Fleet Cell of the Future has been designed around what will deliver a measurable impact for V.Group’s customers. Every aspect of the project has been designed to ensure quicker communication and recall of data between the Fleet Cell and crew, as well as within the Fleet Cell itself”.
