Two further 'Italian' ships scrapped in India in 2018
According to NGO Shipbreaking Platform annual report a Saipem platform and Synergas liquefied gas tanker ended their lives in Alang, while further 6 units were scrapped in Turkey
NGO Shipbreaking Platform has recently published their annual report showing the list of all ships scrapped in 2018, finding out that only 2 Italian units out of 8 were beached in Southern Asia, versus 2017 which recorded 11 Italian units demolished in India and Bangladesh.
The Perro Negro 3 of Saipem, built in 1983, renamed by Egro by cash buyer, was scrapped in Alang; according to Saipem, contacted by S2S, drilling platform was sold in Green Recycling regime pursuant to “The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships” dated May 15th 2009, with EU regulation No 1257/2013 of the European Parliament with the Council regulation, dated 20th November 2013, on ship recycling and amending Regulation (EC) No 1013/2006 and Directive 2009/16/EC)”.
The company also added that “the sale complied with current obligation to scrap ships in structures approved by Saipem in terms of health, safety and environment, pursuant to ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, ISO 30000 international standards”.
Cafiero Mattioli failed to comment the second scrapping involving liquefied gas tanker Syn Atlas (1993) of Synergas.
The list of Italian ships scrapped in 2018 also encompasses other units which ended their lives in Aliaga, Turkey.
Barge Amt Trader (1978) of Augustea, Daniela I (general cargo built in 1989) of Stema Srl (Nova Mar), Anemos, ex Moby Baby, which, according to S2S and Onorato group's confirmation, was sold Portucalence in 2017, threfore holding no relation with the company, although we don't know if the ship operated in Greece.
Same situation for tanker Vinlandia, built in 1979, whose beneficial owner – said the NGO - was
Sicilship and commercial operator Adorsea.
Francesco Adorno, heading the latter group, confirmed the ship was never owned by the company, which acted as SMS (Safety Management System) for the Vinlandia.
Finally ro-ro Abrina (1980) of Log Brin, seemingly ex Sabrina, owned by Brindisi-based company, seemingly sold in Montenegro, and cement ship Ole of Imsa.
Regarding the ships scrapped in Aliaga, none of them was apparently scrapped in any of the two Turkish yards approved by the European Union, listed in the so called European List, namely Leyal Gemi Sokum Sanayi Ve Ticaret Ltd. and Leyal-Demtas Gemi Sokum Sanayi.
The Vinlandia was scrapped by Ersay Gemi Geri Donusum, the Anemos by Bms Gemi Geri Donusum and the Abrina by Ege Gemi Sokum San Ve Tic As.
2018 'annus horribilis' for scrapping in Southern Asia
Despite Italy's 2018 performance shows better results, according to NGO Shipbreaking Platform data, last year was one of the worst in the last decade for Southern Asia yards for the number of accidents at work which caused 35 deaths (14 in Alang, 20 in Bangladesh and 1 in Pakistan), plul various wounded.
Overall 744 ships were scrapped, 518 in India (253), Bangladesh (185) and Pakistan (80), which reached altoghether 90.4% scrapped tonnage.
According to the NGO, among the worst scrappers are listed the UAE, the United States and Greece, which respectively sent to Asia 61, 57 and 53 ships, the worst operators are South Korean Sinokor Merchant Marine (11 scrapped units in India and Bangladesh), followed by Norwegian Nordic American Tankers (listed at NYSE, 8 ships scrapped in Southern Asia), by Dr Peters GmbH & Co K and Chevron, Costamare, H-Line, Louis plc, Seabulk, Sovcomflot, Teekay, Zodiac Group and CMB.
Even the number of scrapped offshore units has soared: 138 in 2018, 96 of which in Southern Asia.
“2018 figures are terrific: no shipowner can deny to know the terrible situation affecting these yards, however they continue selling their ships to the worst scrapping installation to get higher profit.
The beaching practice is extremely harmful, workers risk their lives, and eco-systems are destroyed” commented Ingvild Jenssen, CEO and founder of Shipbreaking Platform.
Responsible companies are Boskalis, Hapag Lloyd, Wallenius-Wilhelmsen and Grieg, they scrap their ships far away from beaches.
The EU published a list of safe and clean shiprecycling operators and according to Shipbreaking Platform all ships should be scrapped in these structures.
