VTE Genoa scores record berthing the 16,600 TEUs MSC Istanbul
Captain Pettorino (Genoa Harbour Masters) responds to Aponte regarding the arrival of large ships in Sampierdarena: “We are not the ones who should dare”
On December 18th, 17,000 TEUs container ship MSC Istanbul called at Genoa port.
As announced by Switzerland-based shipowner, this last generation unit, reaching 399.9 metres in length, 58.8 metres in breadth, capable to carry 16,652 TEUS and flying the Liberian flag, smoothly entered Prà port basin and moored at Voltri Terminal Europa.
The terminal controlled by PSA group marked a new record which breaks former one when they hosted 15,500 TEUs Al Dhail of UASC in February 2016.
The helm of Genoa Harbour Masters, Admiral Giovanni Pettorino, while attending Assagenti Christmas party, responded indirectly to Gianluigi Aponte of MSC, who previously complained that Port Authority, Harbour Masters and local technical-nautical services had not dared to let large containerships enter Sampierdarena port.
"Port Authority and Harbour Masters don't have to dare, they must act as public institutions” replied Pettorino, also adding “they have to keep to their tasks, essentially playing their part”.
Pettorino also recalled that, while he was in office as extraordinary commissioner of Genoa Port Authority, he supported Port Committee when they allocated port workers' subsidies and renewed concessions on some port terminals because they were complying with regulations and not because they dared to.
Aponte had asked port community to do their best in order to accommodate large containerships and prevent Genoa port from playing a secondary role in the global shipping trade.
