Soaring traffic in Venice port: +5.4% in 2018
All sectors recorded growing figures: from containers (+3.4%) to rolling cargo (+20%), also passengers have gone up
Year 2018 showed very positive results in Venice: the port handled overall 26.4 million tons freight, recording 5.4% growth versus 25.1 millions reached in 2016.
Also passengers showed positive figures: 1.7 millions, 1.5 of which cruisers (+9.2% versus 2017) and 208,602 short-sea services and ferries.
Manufacturing products (exclusively serving Veneto and the Italian North East industries), such as containers, solid bulks (steel products, liquid bulks or packaged goods) reached 52%.
Followed by the energy sector – particularly additives for bio-diesel blending or other raw materials for energy production – which recorded 38%, while the agri and food industry showed 10%.
Containers handling essentially grew by 3.4% reaching 632,250 TEU, exclusively coming from or heading for local or North East industries.
Even project cargo sector showed positive results – 800 high value equipment were handled in 2018 – while rolling cargo reached +20,8% for 1,841,491 tons, “confirming the appeal of Fusina new terminal exclusively committed to ro-ro and ro-pax trade”, comments the Authority.
Year 2018 also recorded excellent results in intermodal development showing record breaking figures in railway transport: last year overall 100,754 wagons were handled (+11.3% versus 2017) namely 2.6 million tons (11.2%) equal to 5,543 train/year handled at Marghera Scalo, heading to Cremona, Verona and Rho in Italy but also reaching foreign destinations through the Brenner and Tarvisio tunnels.
Finally solid bulk shows +7,8% (cereal sector showed the best performance recording +27,6% annual growth), construction materials (metals, cement, lime, mortar) show +34,8% versus 2017.
